Kutch, Gujarat – In a big step towards protecting nature and animals, Vantara and the Gujarat Forest Department have worked together to release 20 spotted deer into the Banni Grasslands in Kutch. This move is meant to bring back balance to the local environment and help wild animals live freely in their natural home.
The Banni Grasslands, spread over 2,618 square kilometers, are one of the largest grassland areas in Asia. These lands are very important for wildlife and nature. But over the years, many wild animals have disappeared due to various reasons. To solve this problem, spotted deer have now been added to this region in a protected area of 70 hectares.

How Was It Done?
These 20 spotted deer were carefully brought from Vantara’s wildlife conservation centre in Jamnagar. They were transported in special ambulances made especially for animals, so that they stay safe and comfortable during the journey.
The entire release process was carried out under the guidance of the Gujarat Forest Department, while Vantara provided technical support, medical help, and special tools to make the job easier and safer for the animals.
Before releasing the deer, a joint inspection was done by forest officers, wildlife experts, and doctors from both Vantara and the Forest Department. They checked if the place was good enough for the deer to live and grow. After full planning and study, the deer were released into their new home.

Why Is This Important?
The Banni Grasslands are home to several important wild animals like:
- Indian gazelle (chinkara)
- Indian wolf
- Golden jackal
- Nilgai (blue bull)
- Striped hyena
- Indian fox
But due to environmental damage and invasive plants, some of these animals are finding it hard to survive. By adding more herbivores like spotted deer, the aim is to restore the natural food chain and bring back the balance in the ecosystem.

What’s Next?
This is just the beginning. More efforts will be made in the future to restore other species and improve the condition of the grasslands. The Gujarat Forest Department will continue working to:
- Protect native animals
- Remove harmful plants
- Grow more local grasses
- Maintain healthy natural habitats
