Vantara Rehabilitation: In a major step towards wildlife protection, the Chakradharpur Division of South Eastern Railway has deployed an advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to prevent elephant-train collisions. A specially trained elephant from Anant Ambani’s wildlife centre “Vantara” in Jamnagar, Gujarat, has been brought in for trial runs of this new system.
What Is This AI Safety System and How Does It Work?
This high-tech system combines pressure wave sensors, optical fiber cables, and AI algorithms to detect elephant movement near railway tracks. If an elephant approaches within 200 meters of the track, the system automatically alerts both the station master and the control room. This gives the train driver (loco pilot) enough time to slow down the train and avoid any possible collision.

Why Was an Elephant Brought from Vantara?
To check the accuracy of this system in real-time conditions, the Railways arranged for a trained elephant from Vantara Wildlife Centre, which is run by Anant Ambani. This elephant will stay in Chakradharpur for two days. During this time, it will be guided along railway tracks so the system can collect data and improve its AI-based detection capability. This data will help fine-tune the system for better future performance.
Which Railway Routes Will Use This System?
The AI-based Intrusion Detection System is being installed on several elephant-sensitive railway routes, including:
Route Section | Sensitivity |
---|---|
Manikui–Chandil | High elephant movement zone |
Dhootra–Bagdeeh | Frequent wildlife crossing |
Kunki–Chandil | Dense forest region |
Jaraikela–Mahadevsal | Notorious for elephant encounters |
Installation on all these routes is currently in its final stages.
A Special Journey: From Jamnagar to Chakradharpur
Bringing the elephant from Vantara to Chakradharpur was no small task. The journey took six days, involving specially designed transport vehicles and constant supervision by animal care teams. This unique effort marks a significant milestone in blending technology with wildlife conservation.

A Model for the Future
This initiative shows how Indian Railways is using modern technology to ensure both human safety and wildlife protection. With this model, more railway divisions across India may adopt similar systems, ensuring peaceful coexistence between trains and animals.
This innovative move not only reflects responsible development but also sets a new benchmark for combining infrastructure with ecology.
